Wearing the Ihram is the first pillar of Umrah and Hajj. It signifies complete equality before Allah, shedding worldly status and adornments. Below is the step-by-step procedure according to the Hanafi jurisprudence and authentic Sunnah.
Clip nails, remove unwanted underarm and pubic hair, and trim mustache. Take a full ritual bath (Ghusl) with the intention of entering Ihram. If water is unavailable or you are traveling, Wudu suffices.
It is Sunnah to apply perfume (Itr) to your body (head, beard, chest) before making the intention. Crucial rule: Perfume must NOT be applied directly onto the white Ihram cloth sheets.
Wrap the lower sheet around your waist covering from navel to below the knees. Fold over the top edge twice to lock it in place, or use a money belt / clip. No stitched underwear or stitched inner cords are permitted.
Drape the upper sheet over both shoulders like a shawl. The right shoulder is kept covered until you begin Tawaf at the Kaaba (where uncovering the right shoulder—Idtiba—is done during Tawaf only).
Footwear must leave the ankle bones and the top arch of the foot exposed. Traditional flip-flops or open sandals without ankle straps are compliant.
Women have no specific color requirement (black, white, brown, or navy abayas are all permissible). Clothing must be loose, non-transparent, and modest.
Women can wear regular stitched clothing, undergarments, socks, and ordinary closed shoes.
In Ihram, a woman’s face must remain uncovered from direct cloth contact. If observing Niqab in the presence of non-mahram men, she should use a peaked cap or structured veil where the cloth drapes without touching the skin of her face.
Gloves covering the hands are not permitted in Ihram according to authentic hadith.
You only become a Muhrim (officially in Ihram) when you make the formal intention and recite the Talbiyah aloud (men say it aloud, women quietly).
Umrah Niyyah (Intention)
اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّيْ أُرِيْدُ الْعُمْرَةَ فَيَسِّرْهَا لِيْ وَتَقَبَّلْهَا مِنِّيْ
“Allahumma inni ureedul-Umrata fa-yassirha li wa taqabbal-ha minni.”
The Talbiyah
لَبَّيْكَ اللّٰهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ، لَبَّيْكَ لَا شَرِيْكَ لَكَ لَبَّيْكَ، إِنَّ الْحَمْدَ وَالنِّعْمَةَ لَكَ وَالْمُلْكَ، لَا شَرِيْكَ لَكَ
“Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk, Labbayka la shareeka laka Labbayk, Innal-hamda wan-ni'mata laka wal-mulk, La shareeka lak.”
