How to Perform Umrah: Step-by-Step Guide

Umrah consists of 4 core rituals: 2 Fard (obligatory pillars) and 2 Wajib (compulsory rites). Here is everything you need to know from the moment you leave your home in Pakistan to the moment you complete your pilgrimage at the Kaaba.

The Rites of Umrah

The 5 Consecutive Steps of Umrah

1

Ihram (The First Fard Pillar)

Put on the Ihram garments, make the formal Niyyah, and recite the Talbiyah prior to crossing the Miqat boundary on your flight.

2

Tawaf al-Umrah (The Second Fard Pillar)

Circle the Holy Kaaba 7 times counter-clockwise starting from the Hajar al-Aswad (Black Stone line). Uncover right shoulder (Idtiba) for men.

3

Salat al-Tawaf & Zamzam Water

Cover your shoulder and pray 2 rakats behind Maqam Ibrahim or anywhere in the Haram piazza, then drink Zamzam water facing the Qibla.

4

Sa’i Between Safa & Marwa (Wajib)

Walk 7 laps between Mount Safa and Mount Marwa, beginning at Safa and ending at Marwa. Men perform moderate jog (Harwala) between green lights.

5

Halq or Taqsir (Exiting Ihram - Wajib)

Men shave the head completely (Halq) or clip hair evenly across the entire head (Taqsir). Women cut approx. 1 inch from their hair ponytail.
